What El Niño Could Mean for Industrial Stormwater This Year

 

A strengthening El Niño is expected to influence weather patterns through hurricane season and into winter. While no two years are exactly alike, changing rainfall patterns, storm activity, and seasonal flooding could create new challenges for industrial facilities managing stormwater.

Every year, facilities prepare for storm season.

Does El Niño Mean Fewer Hurricanes?

Historically, strong El Niño events have increased the likelihood of wetter winter conditions across much of the southern United States, while shifting storm tracks can also influence snow, ice, and severe weather in other regions.

That means stormwater planning should not end once summer is over.

Facilities may need to prepare for additional rainfall, saturated ground conditions, and changing weather patterns well into the colder months.

Preparing Before Severe Weather Arrives

Whether this year's El Niño ultimately proves historic or simply stronger than average, the best preparation remains largely the same.

Before severe weather becomes more frequent, facilities should consider:
